When Congress trades what it oversees

How this is built. Committee assignments come from the public unitedstates/congress-legislators rosters; trades come from STOCK Act disclosures. A trade is flagged when the stock's sector matches a sector one of the member's committees oversees.

What it is not. This is not an accusation of insider trading or of any wrongdoing. Holding and trading shares in an overseen industry is legal, disclosure is exactly what the STOCK Act requires, and many members' trades are directed by advisers or held in accounts they do not personally control.

Deliberate limits. Only committees with narrow, specific oversight are matched — Appropriations, Budget, Ways and Means, Judiciary and the other broad committees touch every company in the economy, so flagging them would make the signal meaningless. Trades are only checked when we know the company's sector, which we don't for every stock, so treat this as a floor rather than a complete count.
